What is the admission process?

Cal Poly Pomona will use supplemental criteria to admit first-time freshmen.  All first-time freshman applicants must apply during the initial filing period and must submit SAT or ACT scores regardless of their high school grade point average.  The SAT or ACT must be taken no later than December 2009.  An eligibility index using the SAT or ACT score and high school grade point average will be calculated for all first-time freshmen.

Cal Poly Pomona will continue to admit all fully CSU eligible first-time freshmen applicants who graduate from high schools in Cal Poly Pomona’s local service area on the basis of CSU admission eligibility criteria.  All other first-time freshman applicants will be rank-ordered by eligibility index.  The academic characteristics of the freshman applicant pool will determine the eligibility index cut-off and may vary from year to year.

Approximately 10 percent of the freshman class may be admitted based on a rank-ordered eligibility index and additional characteristics, which include socioeconomic or educational factors, space availability in a unique program or major, indications of overcoming educational obstacles, or exceptional talents.

All CSU subject matter requirements must be complete, in progress, or planned to be completed with a “C” or better prior to high school graduation and may not be completed during the summer term immediately preceding fall enrollment.

How has Cal Poly Pomona defined its local area?

What is the CSU eligibility index?
The CSU eligibility index is the result of a formula that combines your achievement in high school courses with the results of the SAT or ACT. The index uses your earned grades in all college preparatory courses taken in 10th through 12th grade. What if I apply to Architecture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Animal Science or Animal Health Science?

Architecture, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Animal Science and Animal Health Science are impacted at the program level and therefore, there is no distinction between Tier 1 and Tier 2 applicants in the admission process.  All candidates must meet regular University admission standards, be a California resident, and meet any additional standards required by the Departments.  Be advised that you may not be processed in your alternate major listed on the application if not selected for one of these programs.  Admission of first-time freshmen will be based on the eligibility index.  For specific admission information regarding Architecture, please contact the College of Environmental Design Office of Students Affairs at (909) 869-2670 or visit the Department of Architecture website. How do I apply to Cal Poly Pomona?

We strongly encourage you to apply to Cal Poly Pomona on-line by visiting CSUMentor. If you do not have access to the Web, application forms may be obtained at any California high school or community college or from the Admissions Office at any of the campuses of the California State University.

Your application, whether paper or electronic, and $55.00 filing fee
(or fee waiver request) must be submitted by the application deadline.

Apply on-line!  Application receipt will be confirmed via email.

When is the application deadline?
First-time Freshmen can apply only for the Fall term.  The filing period for the fall term is October 1- November 30 (of the previous year).

How will I know that you received my application?
If you apply via CSUMentor, you will receive an email confirmation that we have received your application. During peak periods of application processing, it may take four to six weeks to acknowledge receipt of paper applications by letter.

When should I send my transcript(s) and other required documents?
 Do not send your high school transcripts prior to graduation unless we specifically request them.  After we review your application, we may find that we have sufficient information to make a preliminary admission decision.

You are required to submit any and all documents requested in a timely fashion and prior to any document deadlines as stated in any paper or electronic communication that we send.  Failure to do so will result in your removal from consideration for admission, including the rescinding of an offer of admission.

When should I send my test score(s)?

To be considered for Fall 2010 admission, you must take the SAT or ACT preferably by the end of October 2009, but no later than December 2009. You must request your score results be sent directly to Cal Poly Pomona from the testing agency, (ETS/SAT campus code 4082 and the ACT campus code 0202). For more information on these tests, check out the CollegeBoard or ACT web-site.

English Placement Test/Entry Level Mathematics (EPT/ELM) Tests must be taken by all undergraduate students enrolling at Cal Poly Pomona, or have documentation of exemption. We encourage students to take the test(s) early, preferably in January or March, but no later than May. Please note that any required placement test must be taken no later than May 2010. If you received a mathematics status of Ready for CSU college-level mathematics courses - Conditional on the augmented math CST, i.e. the CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP), taken in grade 11, this status score does not satisfy the entry level math requirement (see exemptions). If you are not enrolled for the entire year in a senior year experience (see http://www.csumathsuccess.org/hs_course_msw) to upgrade your conditional exempt status to exempt, and are not exempt by any of the exemption criteria, you need to take the ELM.

When will I be notified of my admission status?
 For students from Cal Poly Pomona’s local area, most offers of admission will be sent November through December.  Students who are required to submit 7^th semester transcripts will be notified at a later date. 

For students outside of Cal Poly Pomona’s local area, offers of admission will be sent beginning early March.  Notification to waiting list applicants will be sent during June and July.

Are there conditions of an admissions offer?
 YES!  Unless you already graduated from high school prior to applying, all offers of admission will be "provisional".  Specific terms of a provisional admission are contained in letters and the official notice of admission.  Generally, if you are offered provisional admission, you must:
  • Verify high school graduation with a final 8^th semester high school transcript;
  • Complete all courses in your senior year with grades of "C" or higher;
  • Successfully complete all courses to meet the full CSU 15-unit subject pattern;
  • Supply all required documents by the established deadlines. and
  • Meet CSU minimum eligibility index

After we receive your final documents, your "provisional" admission will be reviewed and your admission confirmed.  If you have not maintained eligibility, your offer of admission will be rescinded.  See the admissions requirements for first-time freshmen.

Are there important requirements if you are admitted?

Student Intent to Register and Enrollment Confirmation Deposit (SIR and ECD) is required of all admitted undergraduate applicants.  Applicants who respond past the ECD deadline may be placed on an enrollment waiting list, deferred to a subsequent term or not permitted to register.
