2006 Media Guide
U.S. Soccer Hall of Famer Paul Caligiuri returns for his sixth season as the head coach of the men’s soccer program and his second since Cal Poly Pomona split the men’s and women’s programs earlier in 2006.
The Broncos earned their first nonlosing season at 8-8-3 since 2000. The big stat for 2006: when the Broncos scored two or more goals, they went 7-0; without 1-8-3. Caligiuri and company hope 2007 will continue the Broncos’ charge toward the always-difficult California Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The Broncos’ 2007 squad will return six starters from last year’s squad. Among the returning players are seniors Ben Van der Fluit and Peter Hazdovac, who will serve as team captains. Both players have earned honorable mention CCAA honors in their career. Also returning are Thomas Ryan, Tomislav Antunovich, Kevin Jin, Wayne Kao, Rigo Cardenas, Ben Sussman, Miguel Abascal and Brad Jones. Cal Poly Pomona also includes what it believes is a deep and talented recruiting class that will make competition for roster spots intense.
Cal Poly Pomona has made one NCAA postseason appearance in the men’s soccer program’s history. That came in 1998 when the Broncos advanced and lost in the first round to Grand Canyon, 3-1. The program has had one All-American, Trevor Perrson, who earned third-team honors in 2000.
