Cal Poly Pomona’s track and field teams enter the 2008 season with a change at the top. Head coach Troy Johnson begins his first season at the helm after replacing Hall of Famer Jim Sackett, who was in charge of the Broncos program for 27 years.
Johnson steps into one of the finer Division II program on the West Coast and he looks to build the program, both at the CCAA level and on the national level. The Bronco men finished fourth in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association last season, while the Bronco women tied for fifth in the CCAA.
The Cal Poly Pomona men's team returns one student-athlete who reached the nationals last season in sophomore Jonathan Williams. The Temecula native earned freshman of the year honors last season in the CCAA and won the conference 100 meters in 10.69 seconds. He reached the NCAA Division II meet in both the 100 and 200. On the International level, he competed for Team USA at the Pan-Am Junior Athletic Championships in Brazil, and ran the anchor leg on the gold-medal winning 4 x 100 relay.
The Broncos boast 28 student-athletes competing for the men's team and 27 competing for the women's squad.
For the women, Jasmine Winn competed at last year's NCAA Division II meet in the long jump. She finished second in the CCAA.
