2006 Media Guide
A new era in the history of the Cal Poly Pomona women’s soccer program began in 2006 when Isabelle Harvey opened her tenure as the head coach of the Broncos. Harvey, a four-time All-American player while at USC, is the sixth head coach in the program’s history. Harvey was an assistant coach at USC after serving for four years at Cal State L.A.
The Broncos are coming off an 8-9-2 season in 2006. The Broncos were a team of youth, built on the strength of freshman CCAA player of the year Mary Carroll. The Upland native finished second in the league in goals with 10 and had the most goals scored by a Bronco since Michelle McConnell had 11 in 2001. Teammate Pamela Leyva also earned first-team CCAA honors with nine goals and five assists. She finished third in the league in scoring and led the Broncos with 23 points.
The Broncos return nine starters from last year’s squad. Cal Poly Pomona have a pair of seniors back in midfielder Stephanie Mrazik—a 2006 honorable mention CCAA selection – and defender Lindsey Latham. Other key returners figure to be sophomore Bethany Meichsner, goalkeepers Nakisha Gutierrez and Amanda Cunningham, and juniors Kaycie Meza and Leila Brewster. The Broncos are also bolstered by what appears to be a strong freshman recruiting class, featuring Lindsey Zuber, Justine Barclay and junior college transfer Kylie Duszynski.
The Broncos have established themselves as one of the top women’s soccer programs in the nation. The highlight came in 1999 when the Broncos, led by NCAA Division II Player of the Year Ruth Van’t Land, advanced to the Division II championship game. It was the program’s first NCAA playoff experience. Van’t Land, who was a three-time All-American, concluded her career in 2000. The Broncos also reached the NCAA playoffs in 2001 and advanced to the West Region championship game.
