What is alternate media?
- Alternate media is an alternative to standard printed academic materials such as textbooks, lab manuals, class handouts, tests, etc.
- Alternate media is a mandated accommodation for students that is established by federal and state laws.
- The alternative media type is usually an electronic form of the printed material. However, Braille is also an alternate media, just as books that are on audio cassette tapes or CDs.
Alternate media services are specifically for qualified Cal Poly students.* The qualification is based on an assessment by the Disability Resource Center or a prior history of having received alternate media from another school or institution.
*It’s important to note that not all students that are registered with the Disability Resource Center are eligible for alternate media.
Fact:
Currently, California state law, AB 422, requires publishers to provide alternate electronic versions of their text materials to qualified students.
The process for qualified students to request electronic alternate media is initiated by filing a written request for a textbook or other required course material through the Disability Resource Center's Alternate Media Services office (BUILDING 9, Room 103-M).
Electronic submission of requests by qualified students for alternate media is available by using the PDF request form at : http://dsa.csupomona.edu/drc/files/Alternate_Media_Request_Form_4-2-08_4071.pdf Due to a special project called CAM (Center for Alternate Media), we share electronic book files with other CSU campuses statewide. Thus, many alternate requests can be filled in a matter of days.
Faculty are encouraged to search a list of previously converted textbooks to see if particular titles are available. The lists are available on our Faculty Resources main page at: http://dsa.csupomona.edu/drc/faculty_services.asp

Here is a brief introduction to our e-text program:
What is e-text?
-
The word e-text is short for electronic text.
-
Electronic text is an alternate media that can be viewed through a computer.
-
Alternate Media Services uses special computer programs to convert text into a format that can assist a student or individual to better process and understand the material.
-
There are basically two sources for e-text:
Here is a list of some special computer programs we use to process e-text (Click Here).

Requesting Alternate Media: Procedures and Guidelines
Procedures
Step 1: Register for classes.
Step 2: Confirm which books are needed in alternate format -- for each class.
Step 3: Complete and sign an Alternate Media Request Form for each book requested in alternate format.
Step 4: Provide Alternate Media Services with a class syllabus for each class that you are requesting books.
Student Guidelines
After you have registered for classes:
A) Check your Cal Poly e-mail often for important announcement regarding requesting alternate media.
B) ONLY use the Bronco Bookstore https://www.bookstore.csupomona.edu/ to find textbook information for classes.
It is extremely important that you submit your book requests in a timely fashion -- as soon after priority registration as possible. Alternate media textbook requests may take 3-5 weeks to receive the files from the publisher. Requests to publishers are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.*
ATTENTION NEW STUDENTS Please remember to make an appointment with Jimmie Flanagin for Alternate Media and Etext Orientations. Call (909) 869 - 3333 to schedule the appointments.
