Disability-Related Counseling and Advocacy
|
Many students with disabilities have a limited understanding of their
disability or how it impacts them in the academic setting. Some students
may be recently diagnosed, and are still adjusting this new information,
while others may have known the "label", but are not completely aware of
the implications.
During advising sessions, the ARCHES staff works
closely with students to identify strengths and weaknesses. It is critical
that students make the connection between the problem area and the
prescribed accommodation in order for them to develop effective
compensatory strategies that they will use on a consistent basis.
The
ARCHES staff also works with students to teach self-advocacy skills. This
includes counseling the student on ways to discuss disability-related
issues with family, peers or instructors.
If needed, ARCHES staff
will directly intervene with instructors if the student is unable to
advocate successfully on his/her own behalf. Ideally the students will
develop sufficient self-awareness and confidence that they will be able to
advocate for themselves, both in the academic setting and in the workplace.
