Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services

Overview The Disability Resource Center (DRC) provides Sign Language/Oral Interpreters and Real-time Captioning (RTC) services for registered deaf/hard of hearing Cal Poly students and faculty.
Eligibility All deaf/hard of hearing and DRC students are eligible to use interpreting and RTC services following the completion of an Intake appointment with Gina M. Dravis, the Academic and Support Services Coordinator.
Location & Office Hours The DRC is located in Building 9, Room 103. Our regular office hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. The Interpreters and Real-Time Captioners are usually in the field (in the classroom) and their hours vary depending on student schedules and student needs.
Services The DRC offers interpreting and real-time captioning services for all qualified deaf/hard of hearing students.
Interpreting Services The DRC Interpreter's role is to facilitate communication for our deaf/hard of hearing students in sign language or oral interpreting in the classroom for lectures, class discussions, presentations, fieldtrips, or any other campus events when needed.
Real-Time Captioning The DRC Real-Time Captioner's role is to facilitate communication for our deaf/hard of hearing students in the classroom for lectures, class discussions, and presentations (not as notetakers). Real-time is a method of providing immediate verbatim translation of spoken English into text using court reporting methods, a steno machine, real-time technology, specialized software and a laptop computer. This services is provided to deaf/hard of hearing students who do not use sign language.
