Fall 2008 registration for continuing students is moving from August to May

After intensive consultation across the campus with students, faculty and administrators, Cal Poly Pomona will be moving fall course registration for continuing students from the traditional August time period to mid-May.  The potential benefits of registering in May for continuing students include:

  • Registration completed before leaving the campus at the end of spring quarter
  • Advisement completed in spring quarter when more students and faculty are on campus
  • Earlier information of course demand to faculty and staff to make adjustments to course offerings
  • No need to keep track of or worry about a summer registration appointment
  • More time to plan work or personal schedules around classes

A survey, conducted in February 2007, showed strong student support for changing Fall Registration from August to May.  Over 90% of students who responded stated that they would definitely or probably register for fall quarter in May. Over two-thirds of the respondents stated that they would definitely or probably increase the likelihood that they would return to Cal Poly Pomona for the fall quarter.

For the last two years, various committees have addressed concerns brought up by the Academic Senate and other members of the University community.  They have reviewed the assessment of desired outcomes, level of student interest, the academic calendar, ensuring course availability for new and continuing students, prerequisite checking, and academic standing.  The committees are confident that the proposal will be implemented successfully.

Watch for updates throughout the winter and spring quarters via campus email and Poly Updates.
