President's Council Scholarships Application Process

 
This application is used to apply for the Cal Poly Pomona President's Council Scholarships administered through the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. A listing of these scholarships can be found here. For eligibility you must meet the following minimum criteria.

Scholarship Criteria:

  • Junior or Senior standing in any major for the 2010 - 2011 award year (minimum of 80 units completed by the end of Fall 2009) with an overall GPA of 3.5 or better at the end of Fall 2009.
  • Graduate students in the College of Engineering and College of Letters, Arts, & Social Sciences (CLASS) with an overall GPA of 3.7 or better at the end of Fall 2009.
  • Two at-large scholarships are also available to undergraduate and graduate students from all colleges.
  • Significant contributions to university and community activities
  • Merit only – financial need is not considered
  • Undergraduate students must attend full-time, all three quarters (fall, winter and spring) of 2010- 2011
  • Graduate and teacher credential students must attend all three quarters (fall, winter and spring) of 2010 - 2011, but are exempt from attending full-time.
  • Students graduating mid-year do not qualify
  • Prior winners not eligible to reapply

Application Process:

Step 1: Submit the Cal Poly Pomona On-Line President's Council Scholarships Application. You will be asked to provide information about your Career Plans, Honors/ Awards, College Activities, Community Service, and also for graduates students a 1 page (500 words) Essay.
Step 2: Submit Two Faculty Recommendations (mail, hand deliver, or fax them to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships), one of which must be from your major department. (Graduate students may obtain faculty recommendations from professors from their undergraduate studies.) The person completing your letter of recommendation should comment on your scholastic achievements and personal strengths such as enrollment, potential, maturity, motivation, self-confidence, leadership, perseverance, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. The two Faculty Recommendation Forms should be included with your letters of recommendation.

Note: Please be sure to verify the completeness of your application and submit it to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships by the March 2, 2010 deadline. Incomplete applications WILL NOT be included in the pool for consideration.

What’s Next:

After you have submitted your completed scholarship packet to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships:
  1. Your application will be reviewed for completeness.

  2. If complete, your application will be forwarded to the appropriate scholarship selection committee.

  3. A selection committee, comprised of members of the President’s Council and university administrators, is appointed by the President. Finalists are interviewed by the selection committee during Spring Quarter and recommendations are made to the President for final review and selection of scholarship awards. Award notifications are sent out in early summer and one-third of the monetary award is applied to the student’s school account each quarter (fall, winter and spring).
 
 

Tips On How To Write A Personal Essay:

Scholarship committees report that a candidate’s personal essay is the most meaningful section of the application, and is often a tool in differentiating between candidates.

  • Conduct an inventory of your accomplishments, personal strengths, future academic goals, career aspirations, reason for attending California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and what makes you unique.
  • Review the essay requirements.
  • Write in active voice and keep your essay short, precise, and concise.
  • Avoid controversial topics and issues.
  • Check your essay for grammar, typos, and punctuation.
