University Police Department
(909) 869-3070 (non-emergency; business line)
(909) 869-3399 (anonymous tip line)

The University Police Department at Cal Poly Pomona is responsible for law enforcement, security, and emergency planning on campus.  Located on the campus in Building 91 on Red Gum and University Drive, the department is staffed by sworn law enforcement officers, managers/administrators, auxiliary and support personnel, Community Service Officers (CSO's), and community volunteers. The department operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week year-round.

State University police officers are vested with the same powers and responsibilities as police officers throughout the State of California. Their statewide authority is granted through legislative action defined in the California Education and Penal Codes.  Their jurisdiction covers all property owned and operated by the University, including adjacent public streets and property. University police officers meet the California Peace Officer's Standards and Training Commission requirements, which are mandated for all California law enforcement officers, and have full arrest authority. All University police officers are trained in the use of weapons and carry them on campus.  It is a felony for other individuals to carry or store weapons on campus. The University Police Department is responsible for reporting and investigating all crimes occurring on campus.

Responding to over 10,000 calls for service annually, the University Police Department is here to help, whether providing an escort during hours of darkness, a battery jump, or by answering a 9-1-1 call for assistance. The department also offers a wide range of programs and services to ensure the safety and security of the campus, including escorts, alarm system management, security surveys, crime prevention presentations, Patrol Ride Along, and self-defense workshops.

Staying Safe on Campus
Cal Poly Pomona places a high priority on the safety of the campus community. Most criminal activity on campus involves crimes against property. Limited numbers of crimes against persons are reported annually. When circumstances warrant, Crime Alert Bulletins are distributed campus wide to warn the university community of imminent danger. The Poly Post, the campus newspaper, the annual Security Report, and other communications provide timely information to the campus community regarding recent crimes, crime statistics, crime prevention, security policies and reporting processes.

All telephones throughout campus are connected to a university 9-1-1 emergency system linked directly to the University Police Department. A 24-hour, 7 days a week Communications Center within the department provides telephone and two-way radio contact for emergency personnel and serves as an after-hours contact for students, faculty, and staff. Code Blue emergency phones are located throughout the parking lot areas for emergency 9-1-1 contact and to request department services.  Campus community members should be aware that a 9-1-1 call from a cellular telephone goes to the California Highway Patrol completely bypassing the Cal Poly Pomona Police Dispatch and slowing emergency response. Please program the police department main phone number (909) 869-3070 into your cellular phone to ensure the quickest response in the event of an emergency.

The department also encourages individuals to take personal responsibility for their own safety and the safety of the campus community by being aware of their surroundings, taking prevention precautions, and reporting suspicious circumstances to the police.

Stop Violence Office
(909) 869-3112
http://www.dsa.csupomona.edu/police/stopviolence/
The Stop Violence Office assists women who have been sexually assaulted, stalked, or are experiencing domestic violence.  Funded by a U.S. Department of Justice Violence against Women on Campus Grant. The project's mission is to reduce the trauma of violent crimes against women through education, training, survivor advocacy and support services; to modify the campus climate and reduce the incidence of these crimes by increasing awareness, improving institutional response, reducing institutional and cultural barriers to reporting; and to challenge attitudes, behaviors and values that contribute to violence against women.

The trained staff offers a supportive, confidential, and nonjudgmental atmosphere where you can feel safe and can make your own decisions about what course of action you would like to take.

Emergency Management
(909) 869-6981
http://www.dsa.csupomona.edu/police/emergservices.asp
The University has a well-defined and organized disaster plan with more than three hundred trained faculty and staff members who volunteer above and beyond the jobs they are hired to do. These volunteers are prepared to assist and respond to a variety of emergencies. Training is ongoing year-round to provide volunteers with the skills necessary (evacuation, triage, first-aid, CPR, light search and rescue, use of fire extinguishers, etc.) to support the campus community in an emergency. Building Marshals are part of the Campus Emergency Management Plan. In the event of a campus emergency, Building Marshals and Floor Captains will make personal contact with building occupants and provide them with information regarding the emergency. A list of current Building Marshals and their campus locations can be found under Emergency Operations in the campus telephone directory. The University's Disaster Plan is compliant with state and federal law and is exercised on a regular basis to ensure the University's ability to respond appropriately in an emergency.

Community Service Officers (CSOs)
(909) 869-4139
http://www.dsa.csupomona.edu/police/cso.asp
Police CSOs are paid students who have been trained to provide additional "eyes and ears" patrolling on bike/vehicle/foot in and around campus buildings and parking lots. CSOs also provide traffic control, applicant live scan/fingerprint services, technology support, dispatch assistance, weekend building unlocks, and special event coverage. Housing CSOs provide additional "eyes and ears" in the Housing/Village areas during late night hours.

All CSOs carry a two-way radio providing direct contact with the dispatcher/officers. Police CSOs may be identified by their tan uniform, polo shirt and blue jackets with shoulder patches.

Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS)
(909) 869-3605
http://www.dsa.csupomona.edu/police/vips.asp
The University Police Department was awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Justice (1 of only 9 awards nationwide) to expand and enhance our volunteer program.  VIPS partners police staff and campus community members, working side by side, to perform an array of functions.  VIPS enhances law enforcement-community relations; Volunteers develop a better understanding of the department and what we do, and serve as ambassadors in the campus community. When community members help to design, prioritize, and even deliver services, a closer connection is made.

As a volunteer, you will contribute to campus safety, while taking advantage of a range of opportunities to enhance your resume and professional development. Matching a volunteer's skills and interests with departments' needs, VIPS have worked in investigations, emergency services, dispatch and administrative areas.
