WELCOME TO THE CAL POLY POMONA FAMILY!

The college experience is often one of the most rewarding journeys in one's life.  And this journey will begin NOW for your student!  Just as your student will experience feelings of apprehension, excitement and confusion, you too may experience new feelings and face new challenges.  Students and families may deal with change in different ways, so CPP encourages you to be patient, supportive and understanding as your student establishes a new independence.

As parents and family members, you are partners in your student's success.  We encourage you to use this site as a resource during this year of transition.

It's a Different World
Whether your student is attending college for the first time or has attended another university, Cal Poly Pomona can be a different environment from what your student is used to.

Tips for Parents of Commuters
Students commute from various distances for several reasons. Some students may live at home for financial reasons while others may move across the street from their parents just to have their own place. Whatever the reason, it does not change the fact that a commuter student’s life is much different from that of a student who lives on campus.

Tips for Parents of Residential Students
Experts from the National Orientation Director's Association share with you some tips about parenting a student living away from home.

Having Difficult Conversations
Though you and your student may have already discussed your expectations for responsible decision-making, we encourage you to make this an ongoing and evolving dialogue. A different environment combined with a newfound independence in college may present experiences that will challenge your student’s attitudes and values with respect to a myriad of issues including alcohol, drugs, academic expectations, dating, etc.

Keeping your Students Safe
Cal Poly Pomona makes every attempt to promote the safety, security and well-being of our students and it is critical that students practice sensible behavior.

Keeping your Students Healthy
Many CPP students balance multiple responsibilities including work, school, family and social activities. Especially during high stress times of the term, mostly midterms and finals, your student may acquire poor eating, sleeping and diet habits.

Promoting Academic Success
Your student will need ongoing encouragement and support as he/she moves through college. Learn a few tips to encourage your student's success.

Help! My Student Wants to Change Majors!
Don't fret parents, changing majors may not be such a bad thing. The polytechnic philosophy at CPP helps students find their passion!

Connecting to the College
At Cal Poly Pomona your student will be a part of a greater University community in addition to being a part of the college community.

Financing College
A quality education and all its related expensive does not come cheap. Especially for first time students, negotiating their new independence and managing money are the most challenging.

Getting Involved
As one of only six polytechnic universities in the nation, learning outside of the classroom is an integral part of a student's education.
