Cal Poly Rideshare Program

Faculty and Staff

If everyone who carpooled reverted to driving alone, we'd have 634,000 more vehicles on our roads and 134 more tons of pollutants in our air – everyday!

Southern California
needs clean air and you can help. Motor vehicles contribute nearly half the total amount of man-made air pollution in the United States today. In our area, 80 percent of the brown haze we see is generated by auto emissions. If a car is driven 20,000 miles a year, it will put about 900 lbs. of pollutants into the air.

Carpooling eliminates twice as many cars from the road each day than travel on the Santa Monica Freeway.

What would you do with an extra $2,000-$4000 a year? That's how much Metro says the average commuter in Los Angeles County can save by vanpooling or using public transit going into work everyday. Let's do the math. When you toss together the costs of fuel, maintenance, and insurance, it costs approximately $20 a day to commute in your own car. That's almost $400 a month and over $4,000 a year. Here's the fun part. The costs of commuting drop below $1000 when you rideshare. They drop even more when you ride the bus. Either way you count it, that's a massive savings every year, just for joining other people on their way into work. "Ridesharing is an excellent way for people to share the cost of driving and use carpool lanes to get to work faster," said David Sutton, MTA Employer Programs Manager.

For information on how to calculate the amount of money you are saving on your commute, please access the Metro.net (MTA) Cost Savings for Commuters Calculator at:

The policy pertains to all entities of the Rideshare Program, including the following: carpool, vanpool, bicyclists, walkers, and transit (bus and rail).

If an appointment cannot be verified, an employee will be asked to provide employment verification by submitting a copy of their appointment letter/contract or a memo from the Human Resources department.

If you do not meet the above eligibility criteria, the following options are available for you:

  • Bus passes can be purchased through the ASI Game Room Etc., Bldg. 35
  • Metrolink train passes can be purchased through the Rideshare Office, Police and Parking Services Building (Building 109, Room 130).
  • A free Metrolink 4-trip ticket can be obtained through the Rideshare Office (based on availability from Metrolink not to exceed over one 4-trip in a six month period and Cal Poly ID required)
  • All transit service needs can be obtained through the Rideshare Office

Carpool

Share the ride to work. Your partner does not even have to be a Cal Poly Pomona employee. As long as you ride more than half (51%) of the way to campus with another person, it is considered carpooling. (AQMD Rule 2202) See the Cal Poly Pomona Rideshare Policy for carpool policy and procedures.

Ridesharing is a Simple Solution.

Nobody says you have to rideshare every day. There is no limit on the number of days you carpool to be a part of Cal Poly Pomona's (Carpool) Rideshare Program. Do what you can, when you can.

Don't Drive to Work Today

There are so many alternatives to driving to work alone. Ridesharing is all about a change in attitude. Make a commitment to yourself and to your future for a better tomorrow. Working Towards Clean Air Has Its Benefits.

As a member of Cal Poly Pomona's Employee Rideshare Program, you have the opportunity to participate in a variety of rideshare appreciation events and benefits. Please check online for future Rideshare fairs and events.

Rideshare Choices that Suit Your Lifestyle

Vanpool

Vanpooling is one of the most cost effective and fuel efficient ways to get to work. Let someone else do the driving. Cal Poly Pomona's vanpools hold up to twelve people and are a great way to save wear and tear on your car. It works best for commuters who drive long distances, work regular full time hours, and don't mind the company of others. We have vanpools coming from as far away as Victorville. 98% of vanpoolers say they'd recommend vanpooling to others. See the Cal Poly Pomona Rideshare Policy for vanpool policy and procedures.

The Benefits of Vanpooling
Vanpooling is a group of seven to fifteen people who commute together on a regular basis in a van. One person usually drives and maintains the van while the others pay a monthly fee. There are more than 1,500 vanpools on the road in Southern California. Here are a few of the benefits of sharing the ride:

  • Reduced Stress instead of driving every day, you can use the commute time for R, R&R – Rest, Reading and Relaxation.
  • Saving Money Vanpoolers save, on average, $800.00 each year over the cost of driving alone. You will pay less for gas, repair bills, maintenance and wear and tear on your vehicle.
  • Getting to Work Faster – Vanpoolers qualify to use the carpool lanes, which save commuters on average of 40 minutes of travel time a day, or a full third of their usual commute time.
  • A Safe Ride – Most vanpool vehicles are new; plus, you won't be making the long commute alone.
  • Clean Air – Vanpooling is a fuel efficient way to get to work. That's good for you, and also for the environment.

Carpool Lanes
Carpool lanes are designed to move people, rather than just cars. They are one of the most effective tools for encouraging people to carpool, vanpool, or take transit because of the time saving factor.

Benefits of Carpool Lanes

  • Carpool lanes save commuters on average a minute-per-mile.
  • People who use them report an average time savings of 40 minutes a day – or more than a third of their total commute time
  • "Saving time" is second only to "convenience" as the reason people give for choosing how they will get to work.

Metrolink
It's easy! Sit back, relax, and enjoy a pleasant commute. Metrolink is the newest commuter rail system in Southern California. The San Bernardino line has stations in San Bernardino, Rialto, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Montclair, Claremont, Pomona, and continues to Los Angeles. The Riverside Line has stations in Industry, Downtown (South) Pomona, East Ontario, and Pedley.

The Downtown Pomona Trans Center/Metrolink Station is approximately 5 miles from the Cal Poly campus, and the North Pomona Metrolink Station is approximately 7 miles from the Cal Poly campus.

Pre-order Metrolink tickets through the Rideshare Office. If you would like to try the train, a complimentary 4-trip ticket can be obtained through the Rideshare Office (based on availability from Metrolink and not to exceed more than one 4-Trip ticket within six months). The Rideshare Office can answer all of your questions about train fares, schedules, and station locations.

Benefits of Using Metrolink:

  • Avoid the hassle of looking for a parking spot
  • No need to worry about paying for a parking permit
  • No need to worry about car expenses such as gas and repairs
  • Avoid traffic and parking delays
  • Relax aboard the Metrolink's comfortable, stress-free trains, enjoy extra time to work, or catch up on your sleep

2.       My friend is leaving campus. Can I use his permit?

3.       What can I do about a Parking Violation Notice?

4.       What do I do if I locked my keys in my car or if my car won't start?

5.       I don't want to drive to campus. Are there any alternatives?

6.       What if take my friend to work/school?

7.       Why can't hybrid vehicles be counted the same as electric vehicles or qualify for some AVR credit, or as a single person carpool?

8.       Why isn't my motorcycle counted as a carpool, since it can use the carpool lanes and uses less fuel than a passenger vehicle?

Why do I have to pay for parking?

Under state law, all parking on university campuses is subject to the payment of a fee. The parking program is fully self-supported; there is no tax payer funds used to fund the parking program. Your purchase of a parking permit enables the University to build and maintain the lots, provide frequent patrols to parked vehicles, and purchase supplies and equipment necessary to operate the program.

When are parking permits required?
Quarterly parking permits or daily permits are required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition, the following parking areas are enforced 24 hours daily.

Red curbs/Fire Lanes
15 Minute time zones
Service/Maintenance zones
Loading Zones/White and Yellow curbs
Disabled permit parking stalls

My friend is leaving campus. Can I use his permit?
No. Annual or Quarterly parking permits are non-transferable. Annual or Quarterly parking permits are valid only when purchase from the University Cashier and officially recorded in that office.

What can I do about a Parking Violation Notice?
You may pay or contest any parking violation notice within 21 days from the issuance date.

What do I do if I locked my keys in my car or my car won't start?
All persons having a valid parking permit are eligible to receive motorist assistance. This assistance includes battery jumps and vehicle unlocks. Dial 3070 from any Code Blue emergency phone and a parking officer will be dispatched as soon as possible. We are sorry, but we can not unlock vehicles with electric door locks, or windows.

I don't want to drive to campus. Are there any alternatives?
Consider commuting by bus, bicycle, train, or foot. Foothill Transit Bus passes may be purchased at the ASI Games Room located at the Bronco Student Center, Building 35. Bus schedules are available at the Rideshare Office, CLA Building 98-R2-14 until the office moves in spring 2007 to Bldg. 109 or the Information Office on the 1st floor of the CLA Building. Full time college students save 25% on Metrolink tickets and employees can purchase Metrolink tickets at the Rideshare Office. Please contact the Rideshare Office for more information 909-869-3233, or 4781.

What if I take my friend to work/school?
Faculty and Staff: As long as you carpool between 6am-10am 51% of the total trip together from your home to the worksite is considered a valid carpool per AQMD Rule 2202. Please see the Rideshare Office for complete policy and procedure and a Rideshare application.

Students: See the policy and procedures for the Student Rideshare Program.

Why can't hybrid vehicles be counted the same as electric vehicles or qualify for some AVR credit, or as a single person carpool?
A hybrid vehicle is a vehicle that is powered using both electric and gasoline-powered motors. Emissions from hybrid electric motor vehicles may also have substantially lower emissions than conventionally powered motor vehicles. However, because they are fueled by gasoline, instead of an alternative fuel, they do not qualify to receive any credit at this time. Qualifying vehicles must be 100% electric (i.e., ZEV - zero emission vehicles). While the hybrid vehicles currently offered in California are very clean vehicles, they do fall short of electric vehicles (EVs) and alterative fuel vehicles in several key areas. ZEVs offer significant reductions over hybrids and these emission rates improve over time due to the fact that hybrids produce more emissions as they age. Hybrids will never be true zero-emission vehicles because of their internal combustions engine. Currently, only ZEVs qualify for AVR credit (AQMD).

Why isn't my motorcycle counted as a carpool, since it can use the carpool lanes and uses less fuel than a passenger vehicle?
Motorcycles are permitted by federal law to use HOV lanes, even though they typically carry only one passenger. The reason is that allowing motorcycles to use HOV lanes keeps them moving, and it is considered safer to keep two-wheel vehicles moving than it is to have them traveling in start-and-stop traffic conditions. The federal law allowed individual states to override this provision, if they determine that there is an inherent safety risk by allowing motorcycles to use HOV lanes. Initially, the State of California did not allow motorcycles in HOV lanes. That changed with legislation passed in 1998, permitting motorcycles to use HOV lanes.

While most motorcycles may use less fuel, they actually produce more air pollution than many passenger vehicles. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) reports that motorcycles now produce up to 15 times the emissions per mile as the average new car or light-duty truck. CARB has enacted a two-tier emission standard that is to be met by manufacturers in 2004 and 2008. The EPA reports that motorcycles produce more harmful emissions per mile than driving a car or even a large sport utility vehicle (SUV) and adopted, in December 2003, national standards for motorcycle exhaust emissions. Simply put, motorcycles are allowed to use HOV lanes for safety, not because they are less polluting. (AQMD)
