How safe is Cal Poly Pomona?

Cal Poly Pomona is a relatively safe campus.  Most crimes on campus are property crimes, with very few crimes against persons reported annually.  Many crimes may be prevented by using basic crime prevention and personal safety measures.

What is the difference between Cal Poly Pomona police officers and officers from other police departments?

State University police officers are vested with the same powers and responsibilities as police officers throughout the State of California.  Their statewide authority is granted through legislative action defined in the California Education and Penal Codes.  Their jurisdiction covers all property owned and operated by the University, including adjacent public streets and property.  University police officers meet the California Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Commission requirements, which are mandated for all California law enforcement officers, and have full arrest authority.  All University police officers are trained in the use of weapons and carry them on campus. The University Police Department is responsible for reporting and investigating all crimes occurring on campus, except homicides and missing persons (per the Kristin Smart Act).

While our officers face many of the same dangers and challenges as police officers working in cities, counties or CHP, many enjoy the unique environment and opportunities the campus has to offer.  University Police officers can also take advantage of the employee fee waiver and dependent tuition benefits.

I'm interested in a career in law enforcement, what should I do?

The department has paid, part-time student-assistant Community Service Officers (CSOs) who work day and night hours.   All majors and career interests are welcome to apply.  For more information go to our Community Service Officers page .  Many CSOs have gone on to successful careers at Cal Poly Pomona  or other CSU/UC campuses, and in city, county, state and federal agencies.

Interns and Volunteers are assigned in our communications center, investigations, emergency services, technology, etc.  We match assignments with your area/s of interest. Go to the Volunteers In Police page for more information.

I've heard there are a lot of auto thefts. What can I do to protect my vehicle?
With over 10,000 vehicles on campus daily, auto thefts and burglaries from motor vehicles are a problem.  To prevent auto theft, you should use an alarm and anti-theft device (e.g. Lo Jack, steering wheel club).  Also, be aware that specialty rims and parts may make your vehicle an attractive target.

Campus community members are our "eyes and ears".  Report any suspicious persons/vehicles to the police department immediately.  Dial 911 from any campus or blue phone or (909) 869-3070 from your cell number.  Police officers can not be all places at all times.  We rely on your help. Many crimes are prevented or criminals are caught in the act due to calls made by community members.

My friend had his car broken into. What can I do to prevent auto burglary?
Park in well-lit, highly frequented areas when possible.  Use anti-theft devices to prevent break-ins, including alarm systems, stereo security systems (e.g. faceplates, kill switch).

Keep valuables out of plain view, preferably in the trunk.  Keep stereo volumes low as you may not want to "advertise" your awesome stereo system to someone who may be looking for criminal opportunities.  Be aware that high-end, specialty audio equipment may increase the risk that your car may be targetted.

Your crime statistics indicate that there are a lot of thefts on campus. What should I do?

Most thefts are crimes of opportunity that may be prevented by keeping your property secured and in your possession.  For example, thefts may occur in the Library while a student is asleep or in the restroom; at the Bronco Bookstore while shopping; in offices while the staff member steps away for a few minutes; in the Games Room while a student is focused on a video game; or in the Dining Commons as students are eating.

Prevention Tips:

  • Always lock your office/classroom/lab/dorm room even if you will be gone for "just a few minutes".
  • Do not leave items unattended.
  • Use the secured lockers provided whenever possible.
  • Keep valuable items (e.g. purses, laptops) in a locked cabinet.
