What should I do if I am sexually assaulted?

  • Remember it wasn't your fault.
  • Find a safe environment - anywhere away from the attacker. Ask a trusted friend to stay with you for moral support.
  • Preserve evidence of the attack – If the assault has happen within 72 hours don't bathe or brush your teeth. Put your clothes in a paper bag so that evidence isn’t destroyed.  Write down all the details you can recall about the attack & the attacker.
  • Get help.  The Stop Violence Office located in Building 26, Room 101 and 102 is a safe place for you and they can help you discuss your options. You can call the Stop Violence Office at 869-3102.  You may also call Project SISTER Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Services’ 24-hour hotline at 626-4357.
  • You may choose to report the sexual assault to law enforcement authorities. University Police is in Building 41 or can be reached at 869-3070.  A Stop Violence Office staff member can provide support during the process.
    • Your parents will not be notified of the assault unless you are a minor.
  • Get medical attention. If you report the incident to law enforcement, they may take you to the hospital for an exam.  If you choose not to report, you may go to Student Health Services to test for STDs or pregnancy.  Student Health Services are located in Building 46 and can be reached at 869-2731.
  • Recognize that healing from sexual assault takes time. Give yourself the time you need.
  • Know that it's never too late to get help. Many victims do not realize they need help until months or years later.
