Undeclared EOP Students

Student Support and Equity Programs (SSEP) functions as the academic department for undeclared student populations, with primary responsibility and authority for the academic advising of undeclared majors.  The undeclared status offers the undecided student an opportunity to explore all of the university's programs while enrolling in foundational courses to prepare for the rigors of an academic major.

First Year Experience
The Educational Opportunity Program's (EOP) First Year Experience is a year long program designed to assist the entering undeclared student with transitioning from high school to college. This program begins with participation in the Summer Bridge Program and continues on during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. Activities include participation in the Peer Mentoring Program, Major/Career Exploration Workshops, and individual advising sessions with one of our academic advisors.

Peer Mentoring
All undeclared EOP students participate in a peer mentoring program during their first year of attendance at Cal Poly Pomona. Students enroll in CPU 299 (Peer Mentoring Program) during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters earning one unit of credit each quarter. The peer mentor meets weekly with students individually and in groups to ensure they are applying various study skills to provide assistance to students in resolving difficulties and in negotiating the university environment. Declared EOP students interested in participating in Peer Mentoring should contact a SSEP academic advisor for more information.

Major/Career Exploration Workshops
In collaboration with the university's Career Center, EOP offers quarterly workshops designed to assist the entering undeclared student with exploring majors and careers to effectively declare a major by the end of the third quarter of attendance at Cal Poly Pomona.

How often do I see my academic advisor?
EOP requires its undeclared majors to meet with their advisor a minimum of three times per academic quarter during the first year of attendance. These advising sessions should be spread out throughout the quarter to effectively monitor students' progress toward their academic and personal goals for each quarter. An advising session schedule is posted on the bulletin board each quarter. Some students may be asked to visit their advisors more frequently depending on specific needs of the students.

When must I declare a major?
University policy states that undeclared majors must declare an academic major by the end of the third quarter in attendance at the university. Students may petition to change major curriculum sooner than this, but will still be expected to meet with an academic advisor a minimum of three times per quarter and continue to participate in the peer mentoring program as part of the first year experience.

Declared EOP Students

SSEP offers supplemental advising for students who have declared an academic major, but requires that declared EOP students first seek advising from their respective major department especially with issues concerning degree requirements, course scheduling, and other career track or option related topics. Academic advisors offer assistance with issues related to understanding university policy, academic regulations, financial aid, and discussing personal and transitional issues effecting academic performance.

How often do I see my academic advisor?
EOP requires its declared majors to meet with an academic advisor a minimum of one time per academic quarter during the first year of attendance. These advising sessions must take place prior to the registration period for each quarter. These advising sessions are designed to confirm that declared students have seen their academic department advisor, to assist them with making effective choices about program courses and load, finding appropriate academic support services, and developing effective problem-solving skills related to personal and transitional issues which may effect academic performance. An advising session schedule is posted on the bulletin board each quarter. Some students may be asked to visit their advisors more frequently depending on specific needs of the students.

Who is my Faculty or Major Advisor?
Faculty or major advisors are university faculty assigned advising responsibility in a particular academic department. These individuals are available to assist students with planning academic programs, course scheduling, and career track planning. Each college and department varies in how it offers academic advising to its students. Declared EOP students are expected to contact his/her major or academic department early in the first quarter to identify a faculty/major advisor.
