FYFS - SDLI Track


Leadership Development is an important part of the First Year, First Step experience.  In order to foster the leader within our students, we have developed an SDLI track geared specifically towards the FYFS students.  Students will receive a certificate upon completion of the program.

Students successfully completing the program will meet the following expectations:

There will be two (2) core workshops all students must take in order to complete their FYFS-SDLI track:

  • What is Leadership?
  • My FYFS action plan(s)

Residents can select three (3) additional SDLI workshops from the list below:

  • Assertiveness Training
  • Time Management
  • How to Get Involved on Campus
  • Diversity Training
  • How to be a healthy & Fit Student
  • Safe Zone Training
  • Tools for Academic Success
  • What Does it Mean to be Socially Responsible?
  • Project Resume: Make it Work!
  • Got Values? How Values Influence Career Choices
  • Mentoring & Finding a Mentor
  • Top Candidates: Master the Interview

Residents will be expected to complete (at least) two (2) from the following Student Support and Equity Programs (SSEP) activities:

  • Major/Career Exploration Workshop.
  • Attend a departmental “Change of Major” meeting.
  • Complete the Career & Major Exploration Worksheet at the Career Center.
  • Make an appointment with a Career Counselor to complete a career interest inventory OR complete on-line assessments and discuss results with academic advisor.
  • Complete the Major Card Sort Activity on-line.
  • Complete an informational interview.
  • Interview the Department Chair (or another faculty member) of the major you are interested in.
  • Observe a course in the major interest area of your choice, with permission of instructor.
  • Volunteer to work in major interest area.
