• Earn 4 units of unrestricted elective credit units
  towards your degree

Becoming a Part of the Experience

1. Be an accepted first-year student to Cal Poly Pomona.
2. Follow the instructions on the University Housing Services website: http://www.dsa.csupomona.edu/uhs to access the Student Housing License Agreement.
3. Complete on-line forms: License Agreement, Emergency Information, Room Assignment Information and Meningococcal Information. Under "Hall/Theme Living Preference" on the Room Assignment Information sheet, choose 3rd floor of Encinitas Hall for the First Year, First Step Leadership Program.
4. Download [opens in Adobe PDF format] and complete the First Year, First Step Experience application form along with the one-page essay response. Send in a complete set of the Housing License Agreement forms AND the First Year, First Step Experience application and essay. Space is limited for this program, so the sooner you send in your housing information and application, the better your chances will be to get into the program.
5. You will be notified over the summer if you have been accepted into the First Year, First Step Experience.

Participation in the exciting First Year, First Step Experience involves the following:

Community Service Learning Experience

• Commitment to living on the third floor
  of Encinitas Hall for the academic year
• Enrollment in EWS 280 Community
  Service Learning course for one quarter
  during the academic year
• Attendance at two programs per quarter
  involving community service
  throughout the academic year
• Multicultural Leadership Experience
• Commitment to living on the third floor
  of Encinitas Hall for the academic year
• Enrollment in EWS 290 Multicultural
  Leadership course for one quarter
  during the academic year
• Attendance at two programs per quarter
  involving multiculturalism
  throughout the academic year

To apply for the First Year, First Step Experience, check the appropriate box on the Room Assignment Information form. A brochure will be sent to you in the mail. A one-page typed essay response is also required, answering the following question, "What do you hope to gain from the First Year, First Step Experience?" Your essay response should be submitted with your application form. Please complete the form and return it with your essay as quickly as possible. There is limited space available and the program is open only to students committed to living on the third floor of Encinitas Hall.
