First Year, First Step: Your Path To Success!
Welcome to Encinitas Hall, home of the First Year, First Step (FYFS) program!
FYFS is your PATH to:
Community Building
- Live on a residence hall floor with students interested in Career and Major Exploration options as well as transitioning to college life at Cal Poly Pomona.
- Form study groups with those who live next door and across the way from you.
- Participate in interactive programs that create a unique social experience.
Leadership Experience
First exposure to opportunities with IHC, program council and clubs and organizations.
NEW!!! FYFS SDLI Track:
We are excited to announce the all new FYFS Student Development and Leadership Institute (SDLI) track for all First Year, First Step students. This is a collaboration between FYFS, SDLI and Student Support and Equity Programs (SSEP).
Students will complete seven workshops and receive a leadership certificate updon completion. The workshops may be completed over the course of the first year (fall, winter and spring quarters). Click here for details.
Exploration & Community Involvement
- Engage in activities that directly affect your Cal Poly Pomona community.
- Explore career and academic goals.
- Attend in-hall workshops relating to career and major exploration.
Benefits of First Year, First Step
- Resume building and career exploration.
- Academic support.
- Frequent Interaction with faculty outside of the classroom.
- Field trips (such as exploring various parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties).
- Social activities (such as open mic nights, dances, movie nights and pool tournaments).
- Workshops on various topics (including resume workshops, time management, career exploration).
- Leadership certificate upon completion of the FYFS-SDLI track.
- Recognition dinner for FYFS students.
- Weekly community dinners.
Outcomes of First Year First Step
- Gain valuable leadership experience for personal and professional growth.
- Learn how to be an effective community leader in a multicultural society.
- Learn how to foster a living-learning environment.
- Provide an opportunity to build community.
- Provide residents with leadership development and experience.
- Provide residents with service opportunities.
Time Commitment
- Students are expected to allocate between 10 to 12 hours a quarter participating in FYFS programs.
- Students have the option to choose the programs to participate in throughout the quarter.
