University Housing Services (UHS) supports Cal Poly Pomona’s Climate Commitment to reduce our carbon footprint and global warming emissions as part of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment to achieve climate neutrality. UHS strives to find ways to reduce consumption of energy and water, reduce landfill waste through recycling, and develop strategies to promote the reuse of items through collection campaigns for charities and other organizations. The UHS Green Committee is comprised of Housing staff members and is open to student/resident participation, with the specific goal of building awareness, educating and promoting sustainable practices among its 1800 residents. Living it! Learning it! Leading it!
In concert with the university’s learn by doing approach, University Housing Services has participated in the 2nd annual Stories of Successful Learning. Our Residence Life Team developed student led educational programs focusing on financial planning and recognizing personal biases through diversity education in each of our residence halls during the Winter 2009 Quarter. Through values based education, students took part in both pre and post surveys; giving them the opportunity to self report their personal findings about themselves through interactive discussions and written responses. For more information about Stories of Successful Learning, please click here.
This educational programming in the “living rooms” of our residents has allowed us to become more intentional in the types of programs we provide students. We have truly learned by doing!!
